How to Play Risk: Global Domination#

Welcome to Risk: Global Domination, the digital version of the classic strategic board game where your objective is to conquer the world through calculated moves and tactical prowess.

🎲 Game Objective#

The main goal is to control every territory on the map (or fulfill a special condition, depending on the game mode) by eliminating all opponents or capturing designated objectives.

📍 Setup and Game Start#

1. Choose a Game Mode#

  • Global Domination: Capture every territory to win.
  • Capital Conquest: Protect your own capital while capturing enemy capitals.
  • Secret Mission: Complete a unique mission (e.g., conquer two continents, eliminate a specific player, etc.).

2. Random or Manual Territory Assignment#

At the start of the game, each player is assigned territories—either randomly or via manual placement (if the game mode allows). When placing troops manually, choose spots that help secure continents or create defensive choke points.

⚔️ Gameplay Phases#

Each turn is divided into distinct phases:

1. Deploy Reinforcements#

During this phase, you receive new troops based on: - Territories Controlled: For every three territories, you get one extra troop (with a minimum of three troops per turn). - Continent Bonuses: Holding every territory of a continent grants bonus troops: - Asia: +7 - North America: +5 - Europe: +5 - Africa: +3 - South America: +2 - Australia: +2 - Card Trade-Ins: Turning in sets of Risk Cards yields bonus troops (details in the "Risk Cards" section below).

Tip: If you plan to push for a specific continent, reinforce its border territories. Overextending can leave you vulnerable.

2. Attack Phase#

Now, you can attempt to capture adjacent enemy territories. Key points:

  1. Declaring an Attack
  2. Choose one of your territories with at least 2 troops.
  3. Select an enemy territory adjacent to it.
  4. Dice Mechanics
  5. Attacker rolls up to 3 dice (depending on how many troops are in the attacking territory).
  6. Defender rolls up to 2 dice (depending on how many troops are in the defending territory).
  7. The highest dice are compared in pairs. For each pair, the higher number wins. Ties go to the defender.
  8. Conquest
  9. If the attacker wins, the defending territory’s troop count is reduced.
  10. When the defending territory’s troops reach zero, the attacker takes control.
  11. You must move at least as many troops as the number of dice you rolled into the newly conquered territory.
  12. Continuing Attacks
  13. You can attack multiple times from multiple territories, as long as you have enough troops.
  14. Earning a Card
  15. Capture at least one territory on your turn to earn a Risk Card (maximum one per turn).

Tip: Avoid leaving your newly won territory undefended—balance aggression with caution.

3. Fortify Phase#

After attacking, you may redistribute some of your troops: - Move any number of troops from one territory to another connected territory (following a continuous path of your own territories). - This often helps secure a border or prepare for a future push.

Tip: Use fortification to strengthen choke points, ensuring your continents aren’t easily broken.

4. Risk Cards#

Risk Cards are collected whenever you conquer at least one territory in your Attack Phase. Here’s how they work:

  • Card Types & Sets:
  • A set usually consists of 3 cards (either 3 of the same symbol or 3 different symbols).
  • In Fixed card games, each traded-in set yields a fixed number of bonus troops.
  • In Progressive card games, each traded-in set yields increasingly larger numbers of bonus troops with each turn-in.
  • When to Trade In:
  • Trade in cards during the Deploy Reinforcements phase.
  • In many game modes, you must trade in if you have 5 or more cards.
  • Strategic Use:
  • Hold Out for Bigger Bonuses: If you’re playing Progressive, you might wait to trade cards when the bonus climbs higher.
  • Elimination Chain: If you see a chance to eliminate an opponent holding multiple cards, do so before you turn in yours. You could gain their cards and immediately trade in again, compounding your troop bonuses.

Key Takeaway: Well-timed card sets can dramatically shift momentum, allowing you to knock out opponents or secure entire continents.

🚀 Key Beginner Strategies#

  • Start Small, Aim Big: Securing a smaller continent (like Australia or South America) provides immediate troop bonuses and fewer points of entry.
  • Don’t Spread Too Thin: It’s tempting to expand quickly, but a strong defense is crucial. Focus on sustainable expansion.
  • Watch Opponents’ Cards: If someone’s holding 4 or 5 cards, they might soon trade in a large troop bonus—be prepared or even strike first.
  • Alliances: Temporary truces or alliances can help you survive or focus on a bigger threat. But trust sparingly—everyone wants to win.
  • Fortify Borders: Keep enough troops on key borders to deter attacks.

🤝 Diplomacy and Alliances#

  • Non-Aggression: Propose or accept short-term pacts to avoid fighting on multiple fronts.
  • Shared Enemies: Coordinate attacks against a leading player, but be ready for alliances to shift.
  • Communication: If the game supports messaging or alliance requests, use them wisely—over-communicate your motives to reduce mistrust.

Remember: Alliances aren’t binding; a strong ally can become your biggest threat if it benefits them.

🚩 Winning the Game#

Victory conditions depend on the chosen game mode: - Global Domination: Be the last player standing. - Capital Conquest: Control all enemy capitals simultaneously. - Secret Mission: Achieve your hidden objective without letting others guess your plan.

Once you achieve the mode’s victory condition, the match ends. Congratulations—you’ve conquered the map!

Additional Tips#

  • Scout the Board: Know which continents are easiest to defend or claim.
  • Manage the Dice Risk: Rolling 3 dice as the attacker can inflict high losses on defenders, but also extends your own risk of losing troops.
  • Use the Blitz Roll: For faster battles, Blitz automatically calculates dice outcomes based on probability. This can speed up straightforward attacks, but you may prefer manual rolls for crucial battles.
  • Plan for Late-Game: As the game progresses, card turn-ins can lead to sudden power swings. Position troops for quick expansions or to defend yourself from a massive onslaught.
