My Journey Through Round 1#

I went into this round with high hopes, but speedrunning Risk is brutal. Unlike standard games where positioning and diplomacy play a role, this was all about executing the fastest possible moves while hoping the AI didn’t throw an unexpected wrench into my plans.

How My Runs Went#

  • Total Matches Started: Over 500 attempts 😳
  • Best Personal Time: 1:46.00 🕒
  • Final Placement: Outside the top spots, but still fighting 💪

My fastest recorded run was 1:46, which, while solid, was still a full 36 seconds slower than the leader. The difference between a good and a great speedrun in Risk often comes down to early positioning, optimal attacks, and just a bit of luck with dice rolls.

Key Takeaways From Week 1#

Auto placement changes everything – Unlike traditional Risk speedruns where manual placement allows for optimized starts, auto placement means every game is a wild card. You adapt or you lose.
Early aggression is king – The best runs were the ones where players immediately started eliminating opponents, securing fast card trades and steamrolling from there.
Blitz speed is vital – The dice setting of Balanced Blitz meant calculated risks had to be taken. Slower, safer playstyles simply couldn’t keep up.
The AI is unpredictable – Some runs were ruined by bad AI behavior—like them reinforcing the wrong territories or taking just a little too long to make their moves. RNG is part of the challenge!
Good placement, card chaining, and avoiding bot eliminations – The perfect run requires an ideal start, well-timed card trades, and avoiding situations where the AI unexpectedly takes you out.

Looking Ahead: Week 2#

Week 2 takes us to Mont Saint-Michel, introducing Zombies, Progressive Cards, and Unstable Portals—ensuring absolute chaos. Adapting to zombie behavior and portal movement will be crucial for a fast run.

🚀 Let’s see who can conquer the undead and take the fastest time next!
